Did Marissa really die in a fire in her apartment? What if she survived?

Marissa stumbled out the back door of her apartment building, her dress still smouldering. Her face was darkened with soot, and she was breathing heavily. Above her, the flames raged from her destroyed apartment. She hoped that the Commission agents who had set the fire hadn't stayed around to admire their handiwork.

Only one thought ran through her mind now - if she could get to Group W safely maybe Kerensky could help her...

Hi Alyssa, how about a little action before she gets to Kerensky ?

She started to go down the outside emergency stairs very rapidly. She knew they would be looking there too and she really hoped nobody was watching. People in her apartment building had heard that awful explosion and were now rushing out. Some of them even tried to save their precious belongings. She was almost there when a stranger, living on the first floor touched her shoulder in her back.

-“Miss, are you all right ?” he said.

Surprised, she turned around to look at him. He had moved in last week from California and was very handsome. She smiled at him but soon got worried as she saw the worried look on his face. He was watching the blood on her arms…

Should she hide ? she surely could use some help to escape…

Hi Fio, we certainly can't let her get to Kerensky too quickly... then it wouldn't be as exciting! (or as long!)

"I need to get away from here," Marissa replied.

"Don't you have anyone that is worried for you?" the man asked.

"Yes," Marissa said, "But you have to understand, if I don't get away now, I'll be in even more danger."

"I don't know that I do," the man said, "But I will do what I can to help you. I am Julian, by the way."

"Thank you Julian," Marissa replied. "I am Marissa."

"I was planning to get a hotel room until all this gets cleared out - you could stay with me, if you like?"

"I'd like that," Marissa replied. Julian took her arm, and led her to his car, a compact Porshe 944. They drove to the Hotel Pennsylvania and checked into a double room.

In the meantime....

Kerensky heard the pounding on the Bunker door. He turned on the camera, and it was Alicia, in great disarray. She was crying, and panicky.

"Kerensky, are you there!?" she cried, pounding on the door. "There's been a fire at Marissa's apartment... she's dead." Alicia sobbed, and pounded the door again. "Kerensky, are you there?!"

Kerensky felt his heart stop and he looked to the cellphone that lay on his desk. Right then he knew - the Commission had gotten to her because he'd figured out that she was the leak. If only he had gotten to her before they did! Not only was he disappointed in his inability to talk to her before the Commission got to her, he actually liked her, and he had been hoping that some way, somehow, they could have worked out a way to fool the Commission, and be together.

But now, he wouldn't have that chance. He picked up the cellphone, and in a sudden burst of rage, threw it across the room. He slumped in his chair, his head in his hands.

The man Julian was trying to convince Marissa that she should go to the police.

"I don't understand," he said. "It is important to let the police know what happened."

"No, you don't understand," Marissa said shakily. "Look, I need to get to Group W - can you help me?"

"What is at Group W?" he asked.

"Help - I hope," Marissa replied. "I can't just walk in there though - I'm sure they think I'm dead by now."

"But wouldn't they be happy to see you then?" Julian was confused.

"Other people, bad people, would find out that I'm still alive, then I'd be in even more danger," Marissa said. She worried that Julian wouldn't help her unless he knew the whole story.

"I'm sorry - I'm just finding this all a little hard to believe," Julian said. "This sounds like some sort of conspiracy theory!"

"I know it does - just believe me, please."

"All right," Julian relented. "What do I need to do?"

"I need you to go to Group W's HQ and request to see Mr Kerensky - he's part of the Intel unit, and he'll know what best to do. Tell him you're from a computer security firm... they'll let you in."

"But what should I tell this Kerensky?" Julian asked. He looked nervous, as if he'd never lied about anything before. He ran a hand through his blond hair.

"Tell him that I sent you and that I need to talk to him. And tell him to come with you - then bring him here," she said.

It was still early in the day and Marissa had taken a shower. When she came out of the bathroom she looked beautiful in the hotel's bath-robe. Her long dark hair were still dripping some drops on the floor as she walked out with a towel in her hands. He was sitting on the sofa and watched her.

- "Julian, i've got a little problem.." she said, looking at him watching her. "My clothes..."

- "I see," he said, amused. "Got some in my luggage in the bedroom. Choose what you want."

She smiled and started to walk in front of him, directing herself towards the bedroom. She then closed the door, hoping that he would not be ambitious enough to come and take a look...

One of his white shirts was just the right size for her. As for the pants... well, she would have to find a solution so that they wouldn't fall. When she came out of his room he was not there. She heard him taking a shower. Half an hour later he got out. The scent of musk on his face titillated her nostrils. With sadness, it braught her memories of that unforgettable night she had spent with Kerensky at Largo's penthouse. He saw that she was holding her pants.

- "Wait," he said. "Got something for you." He walked to his room and brought her his belt. "This should do, i think."

- "Thanks Julian." she replied, looking at him with her big dark eyes. He then went back to his room to get dressed.

Later, he had asked her more details about Group W while they were eating, escorted her to her room next door and wished her good night.

The next morning he was ready. Dressed in a white shirt, a 3 piece suit and his executive-looking brief-case he had baught on the way, he walked through the door of Group W's building...

Julian approached the security guard at the front counter on the main floor of Group W HQ.

"I need to see Mr Kerensky please," he said to the guard.

"Is he expecting you?" the guard asked.

"No, I don't think so," Julian replied.

"I'll have to call down - what is your business?" the guard said.

"I'm in computer security," Julian answered. "The name's Julian - Julian Hirst." The guard smiled.

"Well, that sounds like Mr Kerensky's sort of thing, that's for sure." The guard turned away to use the phone to call down to the Bunker.

Kerensky answered the phone as it rang. He was tired, and sad, and he didn't really want to talk to anyone at all.

"What?" he snapped irritably. He listened as the guard told him. "Never heard of him," he said. "But, I'll come up. No need to send him down here."

"Yes sir, Mr Kerensky," the guard said, hanging up the phone. He turned to Julian. "Mr Kerensky will be right up."

"Thank you," Julian replied. A few minutes later, a man dressed all in black emerged into the front lobby. He approached Julian and held out his hand.

"Good day, Mr Hirst," Kerensky said, shaking Julian's hand. "What can I help you with?"

Julian paused, unsure of how to start. "I need to speak to you in private," he said. He leaned in a bit closer to Kerensky, and nearly whispered, "It's about Marissa."

Kerensky's face went pale, and he looked tense. "What about her?" he asked tersely.

Julian looked around. He would hate to have someone overhear him. Kerensky noticed his concern.

"All right, we'll talk in the Bunker," he said. "Come with me."

Now - what will Julian say to Kerensky? And what will Kerensky's reaction be? icon_eek.gif

As soon as Kerensky had closed the Bunker door behind them, he turned to Julian.

"What do you know about Marissa?" he asked Julian urgently.

"I know where she is," Julian said. "She wants you to come to her."

"Then she's alive?"

"Yes, though she is lucky to be."

"How do you know her?" Kerensky asked, seeming a bit suspicious.

"I live in the same building," Julian replied.

"Are you really in computer security?" Kerensky asked.

"No, I'm a lawyer, actually," Julian said.

"Where is she?" Kerensky asked, not wanting to bother with the small talk.

"We have rooms at the Hotel Pennsylvania," Julian replied.

"Tell Marissa that I will be there in an hour," he replied.

He thanked Julian and escorted him out of the Bunker right to the elevator. Then he returned to the Bunker and sat down.

He was staring at the computer screen, thinking of her. He felt a mixture of rage and happiness. Happy that she was alive and angry at her for not having enough confidence in him to tell him she needed help. He suspected she knew he was keeping an eye on her activities and wondered if with time, she would have opened up to him.

The map of New York appeared on his screen. He focused on the area of the Hotel Pennsylvania then looked for all the possibilities of escape if ever something should happen. He then proceeded to fish out the Hotel Pennsylvania blueprints, just in case...

Meanwhile, somewhere in New York, somebody was observing him. Noting everything that had happened. Kerensky had put a surveillance camera in the bunker ever since he had found that intriguing pink barette appearing on his desk by mistake. Little was he to know that someone had hacked his system and was now puting everybody in danger...

Kerensky slipped a 9mm revolver into the pocket of his black leather jacket, and left the Bunker. He had debated about telling Largo about Marissa, but he'd decided that it would be better if he dealt with this alone. No need to bother Largo with something else to worry about.

He left Group W via the parkade, waving to the attendant as he left. Though he knew the traffic in New York at this time of day could be crazy, he preferred to have the security of his car. Naturally, it was bullet-proofed, and equipped with many of the latest gadgets, plus some of his own devising.

He was so involved in thinking about what he would say to Marissa that he didn't notice the sleek black BMW which pulled into the road a couple cars behind him.

The portable phone rang in the sleek black BMW following Kerensky's car. His partner was driving as he took the call.

- "Yeah," he said. "We got him tailed all right. No. Good. Just take care of the girl. We're on our way..."

At the hotel:

Nervous with anticipation of Julian's news about Kerensky, she went to the bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed to calm herself down. She was surprised to see her reflection in the mirror on the commode facing her bed. She looked like a scared animal and it bothered her.

She then lay down on the soap perfumed covers and let her mind wonder what would Kerensky's reaction will be when Julian will tell him. Time passed and she was about to fall asleep when she was put out of her thoughts by the sound of the door opening in the living room.

- "Marissa, you're there ?" said Julian's voice.

- "I'm here." she said loudly. "In the bedroom. You can come if you want."

- "Ok," she heard him say. "Be there in a minute." He then went urgently to the bathroom.

Five minutes had passed and Marissa was getting impatient. She got up and went to look for him. She noticed his silhouette through the half opened bathroom door and was shocked with what she was seeing.

- "Julian ?" she said, opening the door a little more. "What are you doing ?"

He was unthightening the band around his arm, an empty needle still in his hands. Surprised by her presence he looked at her with his dilated pupils. She was watching in disbelief, her hands on her face.

- "Don't be afraid Marissa." he said, irritated. "Just a bad habit of mine. It helps me cope with stress. And you wouldn't beleive how much stress i'm going through right now."

She continued to stare at him, a little scared then asked innocently:

- "And since when did you have that habit ?"

A knock on the main door spared him from answering her question...

Marissa was startled by the noise. She went up to the hotel door, and peered through the peephole. It was blurry, and she couldn't make out who was there. The figure was dark and tall, and could be Kerensky. She bit her lip as she contemplated whether or not to open the door.

If to make things more confusing, the phone rang. She left the door and picked up the phone.

"Hello?"

"Marissa, it is you," Kerensky's voice came over the line.

"Are you the one knocking on my hotel door?" she asked.

"I'm still in the car," Kerensky said. "I was just about to come into the hotel." Marissa turned towards the door.

"Georgy, I'm frightened," she said. "I just found out that Julian uses heroin, and there's someone at my door that isn't you."

"Do you think it could be the Commission?" he asked. Marissa paled - it hadn't yet occurred to her that he could have known.

"Stay there, I'm coming up," he said.

"Hurry, Georgy," Marissa said. The man outside her door pounded again.

Julian, who had gone to get his gun in his briefcase reached the door before Marissa.

- "Who is it ?" he said loudly.

High caliber gun shots responded to his question. Wounded, Julian moved farther away from the door. Marissa tried to hide herself.

The man and his accomplice were now kicking repetedly on the door to make it open.

After having informed the receptionist to call the cops, Kerensky, who was coming out of the elevator saw them. He took out his gun and succeeded to wound one of them. As they noticed him, they started to shoot at him. The door finally gave in and they entered. One of the guys was taking care of Kerensky while the other one started to look for Marissa.

As he saw them, Julian, wounded, started to shoot at them, missing his targets. One of them shot back at Julian, making him fall unconscious.

Marissa was rapidly found and gave in to that man pointing a gun at her.

- "Come closer," he said. "You'll be used as our hostage."

Seeing Marissa coming out of the room, Kerensky, hidden behind the corner of a wall, stopped shooting.

A man was hiding behind her, keeping her clutched with one hand and aiming at her with his gun. His wounded friend was following them.

- "You shoot at us and she's dead." Kerensky heard him say, watching them moving backwards toward the second elevator, getting in, then vanish.

In the meantime, Julian was vacillating between life and death...

Whose life is Kerensky going to save ?...

Oh dear - poor Kerensky has a dilemma! icon_eek.gif

Kerensky took the stairs down to the main level, and arrived just in time to see the car pull away. He dashed outside, taking down the license number. He grabbed the doorman - "Call an ambulance, a man has been shot on the 5th floor, and he's wounded badly!"

He got into his car, following the Commission car as best he could. His cellphone rang, and he answered it.

Joy said: "Georgy, what's going on?"

"Marissa's alive, Joy," he said.

"What?" she exclaimed. "I thought Alicia said she died in a fire in her apartment?"

"Look, I need you to track a license number for me," Kerensky said. Joy looked it up.

"Kerensky, it is registered to a Mr Green - do you think that it could be Marissa's father?" she asked.

"If it is, I have a few words to say to him!" Kerensky said. "What man could make sure his daughter got into the Commission!"

"She was our leak?" Joy sounded startled.

"Of course," Kerensky said. He turned his cellphone into a speakerphone, and laid it on the seat next to him as he deftly followed the car.

"So that's why you were dating her..." Joy mused. Kerensky grimaced, but didn't say anything. Joy, however, did notice the silence. "I'm sorry Georgy," she said. "I hadn't realized you felt so strongly for her."

"Just let Largo know what is going on," Kerensky said. "And, do you have an address for Mr Green? I'm having a hard time keeping up with this car."
